Recent events, particularly the Russian invasion of Ukraine and the conflict in the Middle East, have been authoritatively described as the "fourth turning point" marking the most significant geopolitical shifts since the end of World War I to the present day.
This situation brings about significant changes in the security and defense industry. On one hand, the military increasingly adopts technologies developed in the civilian sector, with all that this entails for dual-use technologies. On the other hand, unstoppable technological development leads to unprecedented innovation thanks to AI and its application in military uses. However, it also faces challenges, such as the maturity and acquisition times of technologies or the concentration of the software technology sector in the US while massive hardware production relocation occurs in Southeast Asia, with very relevant implications for supply chains.
Other risks are no less significant, such as those related to security, including migratory movements, large-scale disinformation, cybercrime, organized terrorism, and the reputational risks of multinational companies.
At BDO, we aim to be at the forefront of these changes. Our advisory services are directed at companies in this sector broadly, including aerospace law and its products or services, from conventional aviation to rescue services and the use of unmanned aerial vehicles.
